Academic Tour of Ireland in June 2012


CHAMPLAIN COLLEGE OFFERS ACADEMIC TOUR FOR STAFF, FACULTY AND FRIENDS

KilKennyThe Offices of the President and International Education at Champlain College will offer an academic 10-day tour of Ireland and Dublin June 1-10, 2012, for staff, faculty, students, alumni, and friends of Champlain College.  The tour, led by faculty and staff of Champlain College Dublin, offers participants an insider understanding of the country, its people, and its culture and a chance to see Champlain College Academic Center and learn more about the study abroad program.
Tour leaders include Stephen Robinson, Director of Champlain College Dublin and an expert on landscape; Kelli Maoileoin-Dublin faculty member and expert on early Irish history and other faculty and staff of Champlain College.
Highlights of the Republic of Ireland itinerary include a walking tour of historic Dublin, a visit to the Dáil Éireann (Irish Parliament) and the opportunity to visit Trinity College Dublin and the Book of Kells.  Beyond Dublin, the tour features trips through the Irish countryside and West Coast and to Inishmore (largest of the Aran Islands) where Champlain travelers will visit historic religious sites, enjoy traditional music, Irish cuisine and experience spectacular scenery.  In Northern Ireland, travelers will be guided through Belfast by a local expert to learn more about its history and see how the city has largely rebuilt itself from the destruction of the Troubles.

Dispatches from Montreal

Here's a little sample of the Champlain Montreal Study Abroad blog for this fall.

Entries have included reflections on trips to Quebec City, electronic music, game design company visits and more.

"When I told my friends from back home that I’d be spending a semester abroad in Montreal, they were skeptical. “Montreal? Isn’t that like two hours away from Vermont? That’s not studying abroad; that’s studying next door!” Things like that. I guess I can understand where they’re coming from, but then again, the ones who say that have never been here before.

While Montreal may not be impressively far away when measured by miles (or kilometers!), it is truly a completely different world, offering endless new experiences. Why, as I sit in this café downtown, sipping on my moka glace (iced mocha) and write this blog post, a small contingency of birds are hanging out with me, like it’s no big deal. Alarmed, I look around at others to share my amazement at these unusual customers. Nobody else seems to care. Apparently, sharing the newspaper and coffee with feathered friends is just part of daily life here." Read more...
